Symphonic Brass Quintet

The Quintet

Founded in 2023, the Symphonic Brass Quintet brings together five motivated and dynamic musicians from the brass classes of the Zurich University of the Arts. The ensemble was born from a shared desire to regularly perform brass quintet repertoire at a high artistic level.

Initiated by trumpeters Lucien Papaux and Mik Mohnen, the group soon found its complete line-up with Gabriel Uebigau (horn), Cyprien Gruffel (trombone) and Côme Boutella (tuba). Despite their diverse schedules, the five musicians meet regularly for rehearsals and dedicate themselves enthusiastically to new musical challenges.

In recent years, the Symphonic Brass Quintet has already given numerous performances – including concerts in churches across switzerland as well as within university projects and recitals. Beyond these, the ensemble has also been invited to independent engagements, among them a performance at the Cathédrale de Lausanne as part of a masterclass in homage to J. F. Zbinden and an appearance at the renowned Schubertiade festival organized by RTS.

Members

Lucien Papaux

Lucien Papaux first studied the trumpet with his father, Nicolas Papaux, then with Marc-Olivier Broillet, and since 2021 with Laurent Tinguely, as well as taking classes with Frits Damrow (piccolo trumpet) and Simon Lilly (baroque trumpet) at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

In recent years, he has successfully participated in numerous competitions, such as the Swiss Youth Music Competition (first prize in the final in 2021) and the Valiant Forum competition in Murten (semi-final, 2022). In 2023, he was appointed as a trumpet trainee with the Zermatt Festival Orchestra, an orchestra with which he continues to collaborate. From September 2024, he will take up the position of trainee at the Zurich Opera House, where he will be taught by Bálazs Nèmes.

He also performs regularly as a soloist with various amateur and professional ensembles. Since 2022, he has been teaching the trumpet as a lecturer at the Fribourg Conservatoire and as a private tutor.

Mik Mohnen

Mik Mohnen began his training in Luxembourg at the age of nine with Nico Koch, before continuing at the Luxembourg City Conservatoire with Roman Zaremba and Adam Rixer.

In 2021, he began his Bachelor’s degree at the Zurich University of the Arts in Frits Damrow’s class, whilst also taking lessons with Laurent Tinguely and Simon Lilly. In the summer of 2026, he completed his Master’s degree in instrumental pedagogy, also in Zurich. During his studies, Mik Mohnen began working at the ‘Region Flughafen’ and ‘Jugendmusikschule Winterthur und Umgebung’ music schools, where he continues to teach to this day.

In recent years, he has taken part in training courses with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and the Grand Ducal Military Band, and has competed five times in the Luxembourg Young Soloists’ Competition. He has also given several performances as a soloist.

Gabriel Uebigau

Gabriel Uebigau is born in January 2002. At the age of seven, he began learning the French horn with Mirco Capra at the Frauenfeld Music School. He later attended the Weinfelden School for the Promotion of Young Talent.

During this time, he took part several times as a soloist in music competitions in the canton of Thurgau, as well as in a national competition, where he achieved good results.

After completing his apprenticeship as a builder, he joined the ZHdK PreCollege in the summer of 2021. The following year, he began his Bachelor’s degree in horn in the class of Nigel Downing and Mischa Greull, which he successfully completed in 2025. He is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in music education in the class of Félix Dervaux.

Cyprien Grüffel

Born in Geneva, Cyprien began learning music at the age of 8, starting with the cello and then moving on to the trombone at the age of 11.

He undertook professional classical training in Geneva in Andrea Bandini’s class and then in Zurich in David Bruchez’s class, where he obtained a diploma in musical performance in 2024.

Alongside his studies, Cyprien performed with a variety of musical ensembles across a wide range of styles. In particular, he took part as a trombonist in several projects with various youth orchestras in Switzerland, such as the ‘Schweizer Jugend Sinfonie Orchester’, the ‘Jugend Sinfonie Orchester Zürich’ and the ‘Zentralschweiz Jugend Sinfonie Orchester’.
He regularly performs in a trombone quartet and, in July 2023, won first prize at the ITA (International Trombone Association) competition in Salt Lake City, USA, with the “Swiss Cross Quartet”.

Since 2018, Cyprien has been a permanent member of the “Vincent Kessi’s FreeFellowship Band”, and has had the opportunity to play at numerous festivals and dance evenings across Switzerland. In 2021, he also took part in the creation of a street brass band, the “Sneaky Funky Squad”, which performed notably at the “Paléo” festival during the summers of 2023 and 2025.

Since 2019, Cyprien has regularly taken part in various musical theatre productions by the ‘Compagnie Broadway’ at the Théâtre Barnabé in Servion, and has also had the opportunity to broaden his experience in this field through his involvement in productions by the ‘Creative Company’ in German-speaking Switzerland, on projects such as ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Catch Me If You Can’.

Côme Boutella

Committed to new music, Côme regularly collaborates with composers to commission and promote new works for tuba, both solo and chamber music. His most recent collaborations include composers such as Demian Rudel Rey (Argentina), Alexandre Singier (France) and Éric Lebrun (France). Côme is also a member of the ‘Duo Mesor’ (tuba and flute).

Passionate about the original repertoire for solo tuba, he highlights, through his recitals, pieces that are often overlooked or forgotten, yet are of great interest from both a musical and historical perspective. In recent years, he has taken a particular interest in original contemporary works from the French repertoire for tuba.

Côme has attended numerous masterclasses with renowned soloists, including Roger Bobo, Daniel Schnyder, Christophe Sturzenegger, Tom Poulson and Martin Schippers, amongst others.

At the same time, he has performed with several orchestras, including the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra, the Orchester der Opernhaus Zürich, the Zermatt Festival Orchestra, the Collegium Novum Zürich and the Orchestre de Chambre de la Drôme.

In 2025, he performed Julien-François Zbinden’s ‘Solissimo V’ at Lausanne Cathedral during a concert in tribute to the composer.

He studied at the Zurich University of the Arts, where he graduated in 2026.

Since 2024, Côme has received support from the “Safran Foundation for Music”.
